Prasanna (Kamal Haasan) is nursed back to health by a classical singer Bhairavi (Srividya) after a bloody street-side fight. The two are slowly drawn to each other and decide to marry in spite of their age gap, and a past relationship that Bhairavi is still inextricably tied to. In the meantime, Prasanna's father (Major Sundararajan) embarks on a relationship with the young girl Ranjini (Jayasudha). But we soon find out that Ranjini is actually Bhairavi's daughter. Both relationships arrive at a dilemma with the revelation of an unexpected twist.

The story, though regarded as original has close similarities to a Vikram-Vetaal fable . The last of the vikram-vetaal fable has an identical storyline.

This was the first time Shivaji Rao Gaekwad (Rajinikanth) came in front of camera. He got a very small role in the film, though a very important role. Srividya played the role of his wife and Jayasudha played the role of his daughter. Later these two actresses played as a heroine in many Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan films.
