Nayagan (Tamil: நாயகன், a.k.a. Nayakan; English: Leader) is a 1987 Tamil film, written and directed by Mani Ratnam. Upon release, the movie got rave reviews across India. Kamal Hassan's performance in this film earned him a Best Actor award. Maniratnam earned accolades from all over India and became popular overnight. The film also earned National Award for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.
Nayagan (which means 'Hero' or 'Leader') is based on the real-life Bombay underworld don Varada or Varadarajan Mudaliar, and sympathetically depicts the struggle of South Indians living in Bombay (now Mumbai). The lead character is played by Kamal Haasan, and the film also stars Saranya, Karthika, Nassar, Delhi Ganesh and Janagaraj. The soundtrack of the film was composed by Ilaiyaraaja.
The film was nominated by India as its entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards in 1987. In 2005, Time Magazine included Nayagan in its "All-Time 100 Best Films" list.[1]
The film was remade in Hindi as Dayavan in 1988, with Vinod Khanna playing the part of Saktivelu and with Feroz Khan and Madhuri Dixit playing the roles of Selvam and Neela. A dubbed version of the film was released as Velu Nayakan in 1999.

 Plot

Sakthivelu Nayakar (Kamal Hassan), the protagonist, is born to an anti-government union leader. The child, Velu, is tricked by the police into locating his father, and then witnesses his father's death in a police shootout. Then after doing the final rites for his father, he kills the person who was the cause for his father's death. Orphaned, he escapes to Bombay.
Stranded and homeless in the big city, he is rescued by a kind-hearted Muslim fisherman who takes him into his home in the sprawling suburban slums of Dharavi. His foster-father is also a small-time smuggler known for his generosity in the slum. Upon his running afoul of a senior crime lord, the corrupt local police officer Inspector Kelkar arrests the fisherman on smuggling charges, and is later murdered. Velu Naiker, now a young man who has come into his own, goes in search of the officer and bludgeons him to death.

With this act, he is seen at once a saviour and a man to be feared amongst the slum residents. As their godfather and protector, he flourishes by resuming his dead foster-father's local smuggling activities. He marries a destitute school-girl-turned-prostitute (Saranya) and has two children. Conflicts and power struggles occur in the competitive web of the smuggling world, in which Velu's wife becomes a casualty. Velu's kids are sent away to Chennai as a result and return years later to their father's home, as young adults.
The son, Surya (Nizhalgal Ravi), is eager to join his father in his activities, despite his father's reluctance. For his first real test, he is required to eliminate a potential witness against his father; he does this by hiring outside thugs. They succeed in eliminating the witness, but their failure to cover their tracks leads police to him at a petrol bunk and an accident costs him his life. Velu is heartbroken. Velu's daughter (Karthika) is at odds with her father over his form of justice and killings. To this he replies Ellariyum yetha sol, aprom naan yethran. The death of her brother was the last straw for her and she cuts off her relationship with her father and leaves him.
A newly appointed Assistant Police Commissioner (Nassar) starts afresh the hunt to bring Velu Nayakar to justice over his alleged activities and manages to secure an arrest warrant. This Commissioner is unknowingly Velu's son-in-law, as his daughter had secretly married him. After continued pursuit resulting in the beatings by police and self-immolation of slum dwellers, Velu surrenders to the police to spare the lives of the residents of his slum. He is tried in court but is released due to the lack of adequate evidence for his alleged nefarious activities. A supportive and emotional crowd gathers at the courthouse, awaiting Velu's release. Velu emerges to greet the tumultuous crowd but unexpectedly gets shot by Inspector Kelkar's retarded son, whom Velu had adopted, after he learns that Velu had killed his father long ago.

The Movie opens with a Man (Kamal Hasan) being chased by heavily armed men. He takes out a couple of them with his superior skills but is shot down from a hanging ladder in the helicopter trying to rescue him. He washes up on the shore of Goa unconscious and is rescued by (Sasikala) who brings him to her doctor aunt (Sowcar Janaki).
When he wakes up, he realizes that he is suffering from Amnesia and has a few flashes of a sculptures, karate class etc. but doesn’t recognize them. Meanwhile, the local rowdy has been harassing the doctor and her niece. Kamal and Sasikala are again harassed by the rowdy but kamal manages to thwart the attack easily which makes him believe that he might be trained in martial arts. Since kamal has enraged the rowdy, the doctor pleads with him to marry her niece for her own protection. He does so and thwarts another attack from the rowdy during their wedding.
Right after, he decides to leave for Chennai to find his identity with his new wife in tow. Soon they find out that the earlier flashes he had are of the sculptures in Connemara Hotel and he used to be a regular there. After getting the bank account number he has used previously in the Hotel, he visits the bank and is once again surprised to find out that he was a regular to the bank too and has a locker with a large amount of money, multiple passports of him and a hand gun.
While leaving the bank, he is attacked by an unknown assailant in the elevator but he once again successfully maims the assailant and escapes but leaves a shocked witness. His bank locker contents along with his martial arts skills make him believe that he might have been involved in gangs before and decides to surrender to police but is talked out it by his wife.
We are then introduced to Vijay (Prabhu Ganesan) and Khushboo who are part of a wedding band. Kamal decides to uncover another one of his image flashes and tries to locate the karate class. In One such class, the instructor recognizes him but guides him towards a singer Disco Shanti and tells his that he might be in danger. Another group of assailants attack him and Vijay and his wife are caught in the chaos. Believing Vijay to be helping Kamal, they kidnap his wife and demand the surrender of Kamal but Vijay and Kamal team up to rescue Vijay’s wife which makes Vijay pledge to help Kamal in his quest.
Kamal, then goes to talk to the singer but is soon recognized and is shot at. Shanti helps him escape and gives him a phone number to contact but is fatally wounded. He contacts the number and barely escapes another attempt on his life but manages to meet the person Shanti referred who happens to be the Police commissioner.
He finally learns of his true identity. His name is Vetri and that he was a happily married, to Lalitha (Amala), Police officer who teamed up with the commissioner to bring down a notorious hitman Zinda (Salim Ghouse).Unable to find any information about Zinda’s whereabouts, they device a plan to make Vetri go undercover and make him a bigger and more dangerous hitman than Zinda, hoping Zinda would get in touch with his fiercest competitor. The plan works and soon Zinda and Vetri become friends. But soon, Zinda learns about an undercover police officer in his gang thro’ a spy and kidnap Lalitha to oust the spy. Vetri breaks his cover to protect Lalitha but she is shot and killed in the shooting that ensues and Vetri is chased (this is the opening in the movie) but escapes barely.
Vetri put the pieces back together and uncovers a plot by Zinda to assassinate a very popular priest, when he went to visit the singer. Vijay and Vetri thwart the plot but Zinda still manages to escape. In order to avenge this Zinda kidnaps both Vijays and Vetris wives and send them a photographic evidence of the kidnap. But Vetri and Vijay soon find the location with the background signboard in the photo and rescue their wives and arrest Zinda.
Awaiting Zindas presence in the courtroom for his trial, they are surprised to see an unknown man being presented in the trial as Zinda. This makes them think that the commissioner may be the spy who swapped Zinda out and rushes to his house to confront him but finds him murdered in the arms of his crying wife. Suspicions still exist and Vetri and Vijay finds that the real spy is the commissioners wife and confront her. She shows them a lot of cash and asks them to let her go. Vijay, sees this and shoots and kill Vetri for the money and asks her to give his the money and leave. She, believing that Vetri is finally dead rushes back to Zinda. But Vetri is alive and this was a plan to make her lead them to Zindas location. Vetri and Vijay follow her to a Ship docked on the port and goes in to arrest Zinda. Zinda and his men are soon overpowered by the 2 man fighting machine but before he dies he arms a bomb in the ship. Vetri and Vijay collaborate once again to disarm the bomb.

Also, during the period there should be no contact between them whatsoever. Vasu and Sapna agree to the condition and decide to separate.

sigappu Rojakkal (Tamil: சிகப்பு ரோஜாக்கள்) (English: Red Roses) is a 1978 Tamil movie starring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi. In an era of over-dramatised acting in Tamil films, Sigappu Rojakkal was one of the notable exceptions. With an anti-hero who is a psychopathic, sexual killer in the lead, the movie was seen as controversial by traditional and orthodox moviegoers in Tamil Nadu. ileep (Kamal Haasan) is a successful businessman with a dark side. He preys on nubile girls and rapes and kills them. These proceedings are video-recorded and watched by his adoptive father and mentor, another deranged woman-hater who, as with Dileep, had a disillusioning experience with the female sex in his past. The old man stays holed up in a far corner of Dileep's mansion watching his son carry out what he is too infirm to do. The murdered girls are buried in Dileep's garden and a rosebush is grown above. Dileep chances upon an undergarments salesgirl, Sarada (Sridevi), and develops an attraction for her. Sarada, a conservative woman, insists that Dileep must marry her if he wants to have his way with her. The romance proceeds, and appears to be Dileep's salvation before things begin to collapse for him. On his marriage day, Sarada stumbles upon a diary containing details of his deranged life and, and names of the girls he had killed scribbled on the walls of one of the rooms in his large house. Sarada, meanwhile stumbles upon Dileep's father, whom Dileep had told her was retarded and was not to be disturbed, and gets the shock of her life. She somehow manages to shut him in and tries to run out but Dileep returns before she gets a chance to leave the house. Sarada puts on an agonising mask of normalcy and bides her time to escape. Dileep gets called away on business that night and she packs up her luggage and leaves the house, but is dramatically intercepted by Dileep who gets word of her flight through his watchman. A tense chase ensues, which ends in a graveyard in the dead of night, with Dileep stumbling and falling on a cross which pierces him. Sarada immediately becomes aware of the possible trouble she would be in and attempts to leave Dileep's house. As she prepares to leave, her husband returns after killing a club waiter (Bhagyaraj), who was a witness and would have identified him as the culprit in the murder of a woman. In the ensuing chase, Dileep is caught by the police. He is subsequently jailed but gets mentally retarded and loses his bloodthirsty ways. He keeps repeating Sarada's name, as it is his only coherent thought, and all other memories have been erased from his mind.

Remake

Sigappu Rojakkal was remade in Japanese as Red Roses, in Hindi as Red Rose and in Telugu as Erra gulabilu.
